Thanks for your comment on one of our Stinker clues, Hattie.
You are right that Cromwell’s troops were called Roundheads but we are not incorrect. According to the Oxford Dictionary and also the Encyclopedia Britannica, Cromwell’s cavalry troopers were nicknamed Ironsides, as was Cromwell himself.
Oxford says the cavalry were so nicknamed by the Royalists because of ‘their hardiness in battle’.

Thanks for contacting us. Please don’t hesitate to do so at any time.

Thank you for your enquiry, Hattie. And sorry to hear you had email problems. The correct email address for Lovatts general mail is postbox@lovattscrosswords.co.uk, so would be interested to find out where the other address appears. It may have been published in error. I've forwarded your gremlin report to our editorial team who will be in touch. Thanks again, Steve

Very disappointed to find that your "postbag@lovattscrosswords.co.uk" is not
recognised by my computer. Is it because I'm in America??

I wanted to suggest a Gremlin for Colossus Issue #218...
The Stinker 199 d Cromwell's men not called Ironsides!
Cromwell's soldiers were called Roundheads on account
of their haircuts.
Cromwell had the nickname "Ironsides" because of his fighting policy which kept his men bunched close ro his sides.
Keep up the good work Hattie

Thank you for the repayment of my subscription, in the form of a cheque.
My daughter has a curvature of the spine and went down for surgery early this morning, so the cheque helps brighten up a tense day

Hi Dani. it was the reverse for me,on visiting australia twice to see my daughter and her family and we went together to the shops to hunt out Lovatts Mags, and like you l always have a current copy with me when l go out, l also keep a mag in the car to idle away the time whilst waiting for the family to come back from whereever, l cannot do a lot, bad legs, so crosswording is a really nice way to pass time, keeps the old grey cells intact hopefully for a bit longer, good luck and safe journeying to you. Merry Christmas. margaret

Christine, HELP, l have been doing Colossus Cashword 217,and also eating a loverly jammy doughnut, and yes youve guessed it,spilt jam over part of the grid and now it has somehow hardened and l cannot fill in the squares, is there any possibilty of getting a copy of the grid so that l can refill it again. adore the magazines, but unfortunately sudoko is bit beyond me, my 25yr old son is the maths genius so he does it at his leisure, many thanks again for such a lovely bunch of magazines, hope you can help.
I've also had the experience of a long train journey recently, although not as long as your trip, and there's nothing worse than having no mental distraction to while away the hours. I’m glad you found our puzzles helped to pass the time.

The cryptics are certainly becoming more popular, which is why we are hoping to launch a regular Cryptic magazine in the new year, which will probably have at least one competition cryptic. We will be making the decision this week and I will put your request forward to further the cause!

Thanks for your feedback, we use our puzzlers’ opinions to make changes and shape future developments. Good luck with any more of those long train journeys!

Happy Puzzling!

Over the years I too have compiled a 'Lovatts Crossword Dictionary' It's in alphabetical order of the clues exactly as written in the puzzles with the answers to the right of the page.
I always think that I'll remember the difficult answers but of course I don't so my book is invaluable for solving The Baffler and The Stinker,
My original book proved not big enough and I copied it all out into a larger one but I think I'll need a tome soon!
Big 205 has just plopped through my door. I see that 2 subscribers have already begged for answers. November 5th is when it goes on sale. How pathetic these people are.
Finding the last few answers for myself is so rewarding and could lead to a prize.
Thanks Christine and all at Lovatts.

After using our brains and books there are usually a few answers left to be found at the library BUT the internet is like a vast library and can be accessed in a tick rather than spending ages on the bus or walking to the library.
It's so frustrating to use yahoo or google with your question only to be directed to website type forums with ANSWER in their titles, where every month for every crossword people submit long lists of the questions they are 'stuck' on, mostly very easy to research but they are too lazy or stupid.
This month, someone has asked almost every question in the Cryptic 214. I just can't see the pleasure in it and it's very dishonest.
These people just sit back and wait for other members of the forum to answer for them. Of course. they are hiding behind screen names that mostly give no clue to the real identities.
